Unveiling the New BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe F74: A Game Changer Due This Autumn
March 19, 2024BMW, the German automotive giant known for its luxury cars, is all set to launch the next-gen BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe F74 in the autumn of this year. This upcoming model is the successor of the outgoing F44 model and is poised to shake up the entry-level luxury sedan segment.
Evolutionary Design and Technical Specifications
The F74 has been spotted multiple times during testing, revealing an evolutionary design that leans towards a Life Cycle Impulse (LCI) than a full-fledged new generation model. However, a significant change is envisaged in the car's interior, with the new 2 Series Gran Coupe set to feature iDrive 9, a front-wheel-drive-based infotainment system that's already present in the latest X1, X2, and 2 Series Active Tourer models. The new 1 Series hatchback (F70), due to be launched later this year, will also utilise the Android Automotive-based infotainment system.
Powertrain and Performance
Contrary to the prevailing trend towards electrification, BMW has chosen to stick with traditional fuel types for the new 2 Series Gran Coupe. Buyers will have to choose between gasoline and diesel variants, with no hybrid or electric options on the horizon. In the United States, the range will be restricted to gasoline-powered models only.
Moreover, the petrol models are expected to drop the āiā from their nomenclature. Thus, customers can likely choose from 218, 220, 228, 223 xDrive, and M235 xDrive variants.
Luxury and Convenience
BMW plans to nudge the 2 GC slightly upmarket with a raft of high-quality materials and features. An illuminated kidney grille, massaging seats, upgraded interior ambient lighting, paddle shifters, and enhanced safety systems are all on the cards.
The top-of-the-range M235 model will continue to sport M-specific visual enhancements such as the quad exhaust and sportier-looking mirror caps. It might also offer optional M Compound brakes, bringing it in line with the X1 M35i and X2 M35i models.
Engine and Performance
The tweaked B48 engine under the hood of the F74 will likely be available in two power outputs ā 296 horsepower in Europe and 312 hp in the United States and other regions with more relaxed emission norms. This discrepancy is already apparent in the compact performance crossovers, but at least the torque output remains constant worldwide, at 295 lb-ft (400 Nm).
Production and Availability
The F74 2 Series Gran Coupe is reportedly set to enter production in November 2024 at BMW's German plant in Leipzig. An extra-long F78 model, built in China for the local market, might follow in January 2025. This model will join the long-wheelbase 3 Series and 5 Series sedans, along with a couple of stretched crossovers like the X1/iX1 and X5, which are all locally produced to serve Chinese customers' preference for abundant rear legroom.
Final Thoughts
The upcoming BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe F74 is shaping up to be a compelling proposition for those looking for a luxury sedan that offers a blend of performance, comfort, and cutting-edge technology. Its launch later this year will undoubtedly be a significant event in the automotive calendar.
